Improving school attendance and tackling truancy
Improving attendance is a key aim of the 'Every Child Matters' change programme.
Research has identified strong links among attendance, attainment, truancy and crime. Local Authorities will want to ensure they are providing the best advice and support to schools and to reduce both authorised and unauthorised absence.
This requires effective partnership working and close collaboration among school improvement services, education welfare services, social services, health services and other partners such as Connexions, youth offending teams and the police.

Local Authorities will want to:
- promote a consistent high-profile approach to improving attendance in all aspects of service delivery;
- ensure arrangements are in place for close and regular monitoring of schools' attendance figures and set absence targets;
- share Best Practice across the Authority;
- focus on meeting the needs of school's facing the greatest challenge and supporting families with the greatest needs.
We can:
- review policy and strategy
- provide advice and support to individual schools
- share best practice
- collect and interpret data
- provide advice and training for Local Authority staff
- advise on and facilitate multi-agency working.
