The Personalisation by Pieces Web tool
What is the PbyP web tool?
The PbyP web tool is an interactive website for registered users only, which provides each user of PbyP with an individual online profile of the skills ladder targets they have successfully completed and which ones they are currently working towards. All evidence and assessments are also stored in their area, accessed by password and secure login. Parents and teachers can also view an individual learner’s skills profile and evidence.
The PbyP web tool is also a secure peer assessment community. A learner submits evidence for a skills target and the system automatically sends it to another learner user who has already achieved that skill and level. This peer assessor is chosen randomly and could be from any of the schools in the UK or overseas using PbyP. Email alerts, message alerts and a personal PbyP inbox make sure the Assessor receives the evidence to assess and that the learner receives their assessment comment smoothly.
There are teacher-access only parts of the site to view evidence, targets and progress as well as to moderate some of the evidence which has been peer assessed. The site also offers the facility to set up each user with a key mentor and to arrange short meetings to review success with PbyP and their skills profile. Parents can also login to become mentors to their child to support their progress.
Best work can only be added to a learner’s portfolio when it has been assessed by other users anonymously through the secure online community. Each piece of best work is submitted as evidence that a particular skill has been achieved at a particular level. The levels get progressively harder and so are arranged in 'Skills Ladders'. Everyone using the system has a mentor who can check that appropriate progress is being made.
Who marks all this evidence?
Everyone who has proved they have the skill. For example, when you successfully submit work at say level 5, you become an assessor for that ladder at levels 3 (2 levels lower). The online system then lists you as an assessor that others can send work to. As an assessor you get a rating which can go up and down depending on how well you do the job.
Learners decide where they get their evidence from so they can take evidence from home, clubs, lunchtime or lessons. They can self direct their learning and because there is no fixed content in the system they can decide to study what they are interested in and show their skills through this. As long as they continue to show progress up the skills ladders they can continue to earn greater freedom and can self direct increasingly more of their work.
